People who use low carbohydrate diets lose weight more quickly than with a diet low in fat and reduced portion sizes. This shows the results of a study on people with excess weight.
After 12 weeks of diet, participants low carb diet lost an average of 4.9 kg compared to 2.5 kg for those on low-fat diet.
Phase of weight maintenance, however, that the study lasted another 24 weeks, the difference between the two groups persisted, but was no longer statistically significant.
The results confirm that a diet low in carbohydrates is a reasonable alternative to the limited consumption of fats and reducing portions, concludes Dr. Kevin C. Maki from the Research Institute in Chicago.
The team of Dr. Maki tested the diet reduced glycemic load, requiring people to restrict carbohydrate intake and eat foods with relatively low carbohydrate content. These foods are usually high in fiber, contain more complex carbohydrates and include products such as vegetables and legumes.
Included in this diet avoid the consumption of foods high in carbohydrates, like fruits and foods rich in starch during the first 2 weeks. Abstained from alcohol after this period, drinking moderate amounts of alcohol was permitted.
Of permitted foods were allowed to consume as much as the participants wish.
People involved with dietary restriction of fat were instructed to reduce caloric intake by 500 to 800 calories a day by eliminating foods high in fat and restrict portion sizes.
At 12 weeks the people of low carbohydrate diet had a significantly greater reduction of weight - lost an average of 1.9 kg and the group of diet with reduced fat - 0.9 kg.
At 36 weeks with the first group lost 4.5 kg and the second with 2.6 kg.
